Hooray!
2021 ONLINE May/June Training Jams are Here!!
Please read until the end, OK?
We miss the opportunity being together, in a space working...
But, what we can do is still PLAY and be in CONNECTION with each other, all from home, here's why:
ONLINE Training Jams is our attempt to capture the essence of experimental play that occurs in the studio. New(to)Town Collective’s intention is to engage beyond and through the screens to catalyze a conscious re-connection to our bodies and psyches.
Training Jams are collaborative, interdisciplinary, and experimental workshops produced by N(t)TC. They are opportunities to cross-pollinate training, practices, and ideas between artists of various disciplines as well as non-artists. We like to think of Training Jams as experimental art 'labs' where you can explore and experiment with your own curiosities free of pressures of having to necessarily create 'product'.
It's all about the process!
Regardless of your experience level, there is always room to hone your craft. At Training Jams we offer space for exploration, curiosity, and to expand your artistic community, now online.
Schedule for Online Classes (all Sundays times are PST/PDT):
June 6th @ 10 am-12pm PST - Weave the Way: with Dawn Birley
Space is Limited to 20. We will be trying the "first come first serve" strategy this round. So please sign up early :). Registration will open a week before each class. Please click the registration buttons below to sign up for your desired sessions!
Requested prep for those participating:
• A computer screen with a webcam or webcam capabilities;
• A space where you are comfortable in and have some room to move in order to do the work (we acknowledge that due to shared spaces during quarantine, you may need to adjust your participation accordingly. Please feel free to participate when you need to.); It is very relaxing and casual (aka stress free) doing this from our own spaces. Enjoy!
• To have some "front lighting" (ie could be a desk lamp or placing yourself in front of a window with natural lighting; love to see your face!)
All donations we normally gather for our Training Jams we ask participants to direct their donation (suggested $10-$20 per TJ) one of these efforts ( *DTES COVID-19 Relief Fund, *Unist'ot'en Legal Fund, *Hogan Alley Society Campaign, Elimin8hate.org) we are supporting. If you have difficulty donating to a specific fund, let us know and we'll help you out.

Find new joy and possibility within your own self and living space by letting your inner fool out. This class introduces clown, image work and a smattering of Viewpoints technique to realize your playable “mask” or “character” for performance online, especially while we’re all still stuck at home. May 30th 2-4pm PST - OVER Thank You
"Flexing the Imagination" with Avyen von Waldenburg and Anjela Magpantay
“The actor who will accept anything that happens seems supernatural; it’s the most marvelous thing about improvisation: you are suddenly in contact with people who are unbounded, whose imagination seems to function without limit.” Avyen and Anjela are interested in “Form” and exercises that provide “Containers” so that our imaginations can experience boundless freedom in creativity. We will use the body as vehicles to test what we like, what we don’t like, and what makes us curious. Returning back to basic and simple exercises, in this Training Jam we hope to explore new aspects of ourselves or revisit old ones in a fun and simple way. Sunday March 21st 2-4pm pst. |

“Weave the Way.” with Dawn Birley
What does it mean to think out of the box and why it is so important? The idea of the workshop is to take a look into the interrogation and expression of how stories are being told in the theatre. Sunday June 6th 10am-12pm pst. Dawn's Bio: Dawn Jani Birley was born to a third-generation Deaf family in Saskatchewan and identifies herself as culturally and linguistically Deaf. She is a multi-award winning professional Deaf actor with more than 15 years of experience working all over the world. Holding a Master of Arts degree in Physical Theatre with Merit from London, it is her desire to continue creating work that challenges people’s perception of Deafness as well as rebutting ideologies and myths surrounding Deafness. Provoking the hearing world is one of the ways to push for positive changes for us as a society. Birley established 1S1 Theatre in 2019 with the goal of shifting the paradigm around the Deaf/hearing divide. The inspiration is to continue interrogating the form and expression of how we tell stories in the theatre. Collaborating cross-culturally and cross-linguistically, has pushed us to search for a new form of theatre, one that exists at the Intersection of the Deaf and hearing experiences, that celebrates difference, and reflects a broader spectrum of humanity on our stages. Her strong background in physical theatre has given her an uncanny chameleon-like ability to transform into just about anyone. Her career takes her all over the world, allowing her to work with Deaf and hearing actors, directors, and photographers. Recent credits include: Prince Hamlet (Why Not Theatre, Canada), Black Drum (Soulpepper Theatre/Deaf Cultural Centre, Canada), Sanaton Rakkaus /Children of Lesser God (Espoon Kaupunginteatteri, Finland), and Bernardas Hus (Riksteatern Tyst Teater, Sweden). In 2017, she was awarded the Toronto Theatre Critics Award for Best Actress in a Play for her role as Horatio in Prince Hamlet. She was also named Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf Person of the Year in 2017. Sweden’s Riksteatern selected her to be the Artist of the year in 2015. Aside from acting, Dawn Jani is also known for advocating Deaf rights. She gives workshops, training seminars, motivational speeches, and appearances. |
