We are New(to)Town Collective
N(t)TC is an emerging theatre collective based in Vancouver BC, aspiring to provide accessible, experimental training workshops and creating new interdisciplinary works together.
We are interested in collaborating and cross pollinating our practices and ideas with collaborators from across all artistic disciplines through our Training Jams. As a Collective, we bring together a unique blend of practices including: Grotowski, devising, clowning, visual arts, contemporary dance, playwriting, dramaturgy, directing and more! We are integrating these practices to train and create new works as a collective while supporting each others individual artistic endeavors. |
Our Story
N(t)TC was conceived one summer night in a 24-hour coffee shop. It's inception sparked from a conversation between the group of us wishing there was a cool artist space in the city where emerging artists could exchange ideas, challenge each other, and express our creativity. We dreamed up possibilities of continuing to train and create new works together. Above all, we wanted to create something novel - something special that could bring people together. That night we hummed and hawed, cracking jokes over banana bread and coffee until 1 am in the morning.
Within a few weeks we started meeting in a studio where we could experiment on our feet rather than talk concept. Following our curiosities and experimenting physically in the space was invigorating. We revisited old performance techniques, created bits of new work, and started combining and re-combining our practices together like chemists in a lab. Over the years we have committed to these rigorous, idiosyncratic, and necessarily playful Training Jams as the foundation of our work.
Now in our Seventh year, we continue to train to find our 'edge'. We keep an open mind when the challenges of experimentation offers itself unexpectedly. And we support each other both as a collective and as individual artists.
